Food Rescue in other areas of New Zealand

Kaibosh or food rescue elsewhere in New Zealand?

Kaibosh will look to expand to cities across New Zealand at some stage in the future but have to consolidate our operations in Wellington first. We want to have built good systems, policies and procedures before we expand geographically. These could then be used as a successful blueprint for additional Kaibosh branches or other food rescue organisation start ups.

There has been recent interest in food rescue organisation set ups, but the only other dedicated food rescue organisation we know of in New Zealand is:

FoodShare, Dunedin (established 2012)

Please let us know if you have set up or know of any rescue organisations in New Zealand and we will add it here.

Want to start up a food rescue organisation in your area?

We have found that there is a lot of interest out there from many individuals who want to start up a food rescue organisation or another Kaibosh branch in other parts of New Zealand.

We are not looking to franchise our Kaibosh brand or allow the brand for use in other cities at this stage, as mentioned in the previous section.

We are able to offer people limited advice and support in setting up their own food rescue service in their area. Unfortunately, we are not able to “hand hold” people through the set up process as we are very resource- and time-constrained and our staff’s priority is to keep Kaibosh operating smoothly in Wellington.

We are able to put you in touch with others in your area who are  interested in starting or helping out with a food rescue organisation. If you are interested, please email us your contact details and which area you are in.

We have also written a document to provide a useful pool of information for people who are interested in starting up food rescue organisations elsewhere: Kaibosh Food Rescue Start Up Info v120224 (PDF, 393kb).

The information provided in this document comes from our experience of starting up Kaibosh in Wellington and keeping it operating smoothly. It is definitely not a blue print at this stage but just a starting point for people who are interested in setting up food rescue organisations in other parts of New Zealand. As Kaibosh is a young organisation, we will amend or add more items to this document as we grow, and are also open to suggestions as to other information people would like included.

Other food rescue resources

Note that these are overseas resources, and things can operate in New Zealand quite differently.

OzHarvest

Our friends at OzHarvest, Sydney, have developed Reap, a regional food rescue toolkit, at www.reap.org.au. Reap provides the know-how to rescue food and feed people in the Australian community.

City Harvest

City Harvest is based in New York City, USA, and is the world’s first food rescue organisation and a massive operation. They list the first steps toward starting a food rescue program in your community on their website http://www.cityharvest.org/about/start/
