Wellington charity looking to reward support for May Fundraiser

In addition to the inevitable autumn winds, the fifth month of the year brings Wellingtonians the food rescue charity Kaibosh’s annual Miss a Meal in May fundraising campaign.

This year Kaibosh are looking to fund the purchase of a new walk-in cool room. To do this, they are asking people to miss eating out one meal during the month of May and instead donate the money they would have spent on the meal to Kaibosh.

To encourage Wellingtonians to support the fundraising, Kaibosh is rewarding people in a unique way. “We want people and organisations who really get behind the campaign to receive something in return,” said Kaibosh Founder and Chairperson Robyn Langlands.

“The stickers and badges that you normally get for donating money go in the bin at the end of the day so we wanted to be able to provide a return with some lasting value. Any one person or organisation who donates over $1,000 will become a 2012 Food Rescue Hero and get their name printed on the side of our chiller van for all to see.“

According to Robyn Langlands, the purchase of a walk-in cool room will allow Kaibosh to expand their services.

“Kaibosh’s work is being limited by our lack of large, chilled storage space. We really need that additional storage space to cope with the increasing supply of, and demand for, rescued food and to keep the food as fresh as possible,” said Langlands.

“Our current cold storage is at its limit and without a walk-in cool room we can’t expand any further. This time last year we were rescuing and redistributing around 2,000kgs of food a month. Our average for the first three months of 2012 is over 3,000kgs and there’s still so surplus food in Wellington that we could be rescuing for people in need.”

Kaibosh’s 2011 Miss a Meal in May campaign raised over $15,000 and enabled the purchase of a chiller van. This year Kaibosh has a target of $20,000 to purchase and install a walk-in cool room.

Miss a Meal in May kicks off Friday 4 May with the official launch at Kaibosh’s headquarters and then culminates with Miss a Meal in May Day (25th May) where there will be a range of supporter-led bake sales, sausage sizzles and other fundraising events across Wellington.

Organisational Background

Formed in 2008, Kaibosh is New Zealand’s first dedicated food rescue organisation. Kaibosh rescues food that’s good enough to eat, but not good enough to sell, from retailers and redistributes it to charities working with disadvantaged people. This service provides social, sustainable, fiscal and environmental benefits to the community.

Over the last 12 months almost 29,000kgs of food has been rescued from the landfill and redistributed to Wellington charities.

Kaibosh Food Rescue wins Social Innovation award at NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards

Wellington, New Zealand

Kaibosh Food Rescue won the Judges Commendation Award in the Social Innovation category at the NZI Sustainable Business Network Awards in Auckland on Tuesday 8 November 2011.

This new award recognises outstanding programmes, innovations or businesses that use entrepreneurship to meet pressing social needs through research, collaboration, creating new ventures, and working with community groups and public agencies. Check out the Judge’s comments and our Sustainable Business Network Case Study by clicking here.

Congratulations to our friends at 350 Aotearoa, who won the SBN Social Innovation category prize. Wellington-based organisations won both awards in the Social Innovation category: the coolest little capital in the world is leading the way in the sustainable realm!

Kaibosh is New Zealand’s first and only dedicated food rescue organisation. Our kaupapa draws on common sense: lots of food that’s good enough to eat, but not good enough to sell is thrown away every day.

Kaibosh supplies 12 local charities with fresh food and produce, which is distributed through foodbanks, drop-in centres, and charities where temporary accommodation is provided. We have worked with our generous food donors to rescue over 17 tonnes of good food from landfill so far this year.

This is not only good for hungry Wellingtonians, but also for the environment and businesses who are keen on working towards sustainability and social justice. Our vision is grand, but we’d like to see a Wellington where no food that is good enough to eat gets thrown away. As we grow our volunteer and food donor bases, we will be able to rescue plenty
more.

PRESS RELEASE

1 September 2011

Kaibosh Food Rescue makes a new record: 3 tonnes of food rescued in August 2011.

Wellington, New Zealand

In August 2011, Kaibosh Food Rescue rescued a record-breaking 3.1 tonnes of surplus food destined for landfill from retailers around Wellington.

The food was rescued from Wishbone Kitchens, several local bakeries, and the Newtown and Victoria Street weekend markets. Over two tonnes of the total weight of rescued food was fresh produce, a welcome addition to food bank staples of canned and dried goods.

Kaibosh currently supplies 11 local charities with fresh food and produce, which is distributed through food banks and at charities where temporary accommodation is provided.

This surplus food is rescued from retailers and redistributed to charities who work with people in need. This is not only good for hungry Wellingtonians, but also for the environment and businesses who are keen on working towards sustainability and social justice.

Sharon Howlett, Food Bank Supervisor at Wellington City Mission agrees. “The food Kaibosh supplies us with makes a big difference to us and our clients. Without Kaibosh, this great food would never reach us”.

Kaibosh is New Zealand’s first and only dedicated food rescue organisation. Our kaupapa draws on common sense: lots of food that’s good enough to eat, but not good enough to sell is thrown away every day. Kaibosh was registered as a charitable trust in 2010 and since then, we’ve worked our way to sharing office space with SuperGrans Wellington, where we hire two employees and work with more than 50 fabulous volunteers.

So far this year, we have worked with our generous food donors across Wellington to rescue 13 tonnes of good food from landfill.

Our vision is grand, but we’d like to see a Wellington where no food that is good enough to eat gets thrown away. As we grow our volunteer and food donor bases, we will be able to rescue plenty more.
