Banana Boxes to the Rescue At Kaibosh, we’re used to thinking outside the (banana) box. As demand for food support rises and traditional funding sources remain uncertain, we need more than just good systems —we need creative energy, strong partnerships and more people chipping in to help our food rescue mission. That’s why we’re thrilled to be working with Urban Dream Brokerage (UDB) and The Wellington Company this May to bring our mahi into the public eye in a new way with a pop-up at 126 Lambton Quary during our Annual Appeal. In a busy world where so many good causes are calling out for attention, we’re trying something a bit different to help people understand the scale—and the pressures—of food rescue. Our team at Kaibosh doesn’t just wait for food to come to us. We’re piloting solutions like Second Harvest, building relationships with growers, and running our own food rescue kitchens that transform even more rescued food into hearty kai for those in need. Every step is designed to meet growing demand with dignity, care, and community at the centre.

This project has been simmering over recent months. Inside our largest food rescue hub in Pito-one, we have created a new cooking zone! Kai cooked at Kaibosh will use ‘second-sort’ rescued produce which can’t be distributed to the community as is. It’s the boxes of slightly squishy tomatoes, damaged vegetables, or bruised fruit – often it’s seasonal surplus that just needs a little TLC to be edible. Instead of being sent off to compost or to feed animals, we can now turn this food into nutritious, safe and delicious kai to distribute to our partner charities. Feeding people first!

Each year brings new challenges to Kaibosh but also new opportunities the 12 months period between July 2021-June 2022 saw this trend continue. With the publication of our regular Annual Review 2021-2022, we’ve been reflecting on the challenges and successes of the past year. Undoubtably the largest challenge for our team at Kaibosh in the past year, has been the increased demand put on our services with the arrival of COVID-19 in our communities and the affect that this has had on so many who were already struggling with the day-to-day realities of food insecurity. We continue to do our utmost to alleviate some of these difficulties through the provision of healthy and nutritious food, to the communities in which we operate.
